D-mannose: Help for a UTI!

If you have suffered from urinary tract infections (UTI’s) then you will certainly know the kind of pain and discomfort they can cause. On occasions the pain can become so severe that it prevents sufferers from carrying out daily tasks. There was a time in which many people believed the only way to treat bladder infections was to be prescribed a course of antibiotics. There is, however, an alternative to synthetic drugs in the form of D-mannose – a natural sugar which has proven to eradicate UTI’s effectively.

What is D-mannose?

D-mannose is basically a simple sugar that occurs naturally in wood, fruits and the human body itself. It is 100% natural with a sweet taste and is consumed orally in both tablet and powder form. As a result of being completely natural the chances of suffering from side effects are greatly reduced. Once consumed D-mannose travels through the blood stream and enters the bladder via the blood stream, which ensures it attacks infections directly.

How does it work?

Basically the lining on the inside of the bladder comprises of finger like protrusions. These are a prime target for the notorious bacteria E.coli which is the cause of 90% of bladder infections. A bladder infection caused by E.coli may also be referred to as cystitis. An infection occurs when the E.coli adheres itself to the bladder wall, prompting symptoms which includes abdominal pains and vomiting. As a result of D-mannose being a sticky natural sugar it uses this attribute to cling to the E. coli present within the urinary tract. During urination, both the E. coli as well as the D-mannose it is attached to leave the bladder which therefore eliminates the infection altogether.

Why is D-mannose a good alternative than regular drugs?

There are two main reasons why many people are deciding to choose natural D-mannose opposed to synthetic drugs like antibiotics to treat bladder infections. Firstly, because D-mannose is entirely natural and is even produced by the human body there is less chance of developing side effects. Secondly, as a consequence of the different ways in which D-mannose and antibiotics work, opting for the natural remedy is considered less harmful to the body. Instead of just eradicating the bad bacteria present within the urinary tract, antibiotics will also kill off good bacteria. As a result this can lead to you becoming more prone to other infections. In contrast, D-mannose only attacks the source of the infection, i.e. the E. coli and therefore does not take anything good out of your body.

How do I take D-mannose?

D-mannose is a natural remedy for Urinary tract infections and cystitis and is available in powder and tablet form. The regular amount of D-mannose is around 1 - 7 teaspoons per day although for serious infections it is recommended you take every hour until you have reached 7 teaspoons. Some people take D-mannose on a regular basis to help prevent bladder infections from occurring. In this instance most people consume 1 teaspoon in the morning and 1 teaspoon at night as a maintenance dose. If you choose tablets, then up to 14 a day can be taken to help eliminate the infection. Every case is different but if the bladder infection is not cleared within two days you should consult your GP.

D-mannose Tablets

Tablets are available in both bags and plastic tubs. If you still go in to work or find yourself out and about whilst suffering from a bladder infection then choosing the tablet form is certainly recommended. Tablets can be easily carried around in handbags and coat pockets and are also easier to consume when on the go. It is best to take these tablets with water opposed to acidic drinks. Once consumed the tablets will take on their original sugar form and get to work straight away in attacking the E. coli bug within your urinary tract.

D-mannose Powder

This white powder is supplied in bags and 50g tubs. It has a sweet taste, as you would expect from a natural sugar, and can be stirred in to water for easy consumption. It is not uncommon for the pain caused by the infection to subside almost immediately as D-mannose powder gets to work straight away. Unlike other sugars which become metabolised within the body, D-mannose does not and therefore won’t have an effect on blood sugar levels.
